Americans take to the streets across the nation to protest against police brutality and racism

 “Enough is Enough”: America Reacts to the Killing of George Floyd

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, 46, died in Minneapolis, MN while in Minneapolis Police custody when Officer Derek Chauvin Knelt on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes during the arrest. Public outrage took form in protests, riots and moments of unity across the United States for weeks as the four officers involved were first fired and then charged.

 

Juneteeth in Washington D. C.

June 19th marks the day in 1865 enslaved people were freed in the state of Texas, nearly three years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by then-president Abraham Lincoln. In 2020, the day was charged with protests and speeches across the country calling for police reform and racial equality. Washington D. C. was no different as multiple marches and events took place across the city.

Protesters took their anger to the streets of the nation’s capital nearly every night. The signs of peaceful protests, riots and the moments of unity are around the city as demonstrations in the form of marches, art and banners have blocked many iconic locations.

Kalamazoo, MI

On the first night of demonstrations, Black Lives Matter protesters began along West Michigan Avenue and in front of the Kalamazoo Country Courthouse on Saturday, May 30th 2020. The small gathering grew over the course of the evening and included a march through the downtown area and ended with speeches in Bronson Park.
